The Eicosanoid Research Foundation announces that it has selected Edward J. Goetzl, M.D., Robert L. Kroc Professor with Departments of Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of California San Francisco to receive the 2009 Outstanding Achievement Award.  Dr. Goetzl will receive his award during the 11th International Conference on Bioactive Lipids in Cancer, Inflammation and Related Diseases at the Casa Magna Marriott Hotel in Cancun, Mexico on October 27, 2009.  The Outstanding Achievement Award is sponsored by Avanti Polar Lipids.

Dr. Goetzl carried out pioneering work in many areas of inflammation, immunity and in the neurosciences contributing several original discoveries for the role of eicosanoid regulation of the immune response focusing on T cell actions as well as the complete stereochemical structure of leukotriene B4.   During the last decade Dr. Goetzl conducted groundbreaking research in the field of lysophospholipid mediators. Dr. Goetzl’s was the first to recognize the role of lysophospholipids in the regulation of the immune response.  His pioneering discoveries of several new members of the lysophosphatidic acid and sphingosine phosphate receptors have already led to the development of new drug targets for the treatment of autoimmune diseases and cancer. Goetzl was the director of Allergy and Immunology at UCSF Medical Center from 1982 to 1998.  Since 2008, he currently splits his time between UCSF and the National Institute on Aging where he is leading a newly established research program.
